Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Quest Journal Is the RPG Hand-Holding Purists Secretly Needed
In 2026, Hollow Knight: Silksong is no longer a mythical sequel whispered about in forums. It is a real, sprawling, bug-infested triumph, and it has committed a crime that would make a certain kind of purist clutch their controller: it added a quest journal. Hornet, the fierce princess-protector of Pharloom, now carries a to-do list. Cue the gasps. Is that a betrayal of the Metroidvania-Soulslike ethos, or is it the quality-of-life upgrade the genre did not know it needed? The answer, dear reader, is the latter, and Team Cherry makes it look effortless.
At a glance, Silksong looks like more Hollow Knight. Same haunting art style, same health and magic systems, same grimdark lore, same Metroidvania corridors and Soulslike boss walls. But that glance is a liar. The sequel makes transformative changes, and its quest design is one of the sneakiest and most significant. Where the original often left players rudderless, Silksong gives them a journal. Not a glowing arrow, not a mini-map stuffed with icons, just a clear record of objectives and narrative context. It is the difference between being lost in a beautiful ruin and being lost in a beautiful ruin with a note that says maybe try the big door.
