MLB The Show 25: Fixing the Walk Problem

MLB The Show 25 delivers a generally authentic baseball experience, but like many sports sims, it has a persistent statistical blind spot: walks. In franchise and offline play, pitchers issue far too few free passes. CPU hitters chase balls out of the zone, turning potential walks into strikeouts. This skews season stats and breaks immersion for players seeking realistic pitcher performance. Fortunately, a few targeted adjustments to settings and approach can bring walk numbers closer to real-world levels.

      Switch to Classic Pitching

The single most effective change is switching to the Classic pitching interface (single-button timing). All other interfaces—Pinpoint, Meter, Pulse—rely heavily on user skill. Once mastered, they make it too easy to hit spots consistently, suppressing walks. Classic hands more control to the pitcher’s attributes; ratings like Control and BB/9 directly influence where the ball ends up. Learning the pitch feedback—timing early/late indicators—allows players to intentionally accept imperfect releases, which generates more balls and meatballs. This interface requires patience, but it mirrors the real-life randomness of command.

      Raise Pitching Difficulty

Bumping up difficulty from Veteran to Legend shrinks the margin for error on any interface. Perfect releases become rarer, leading to more pitches that sail out of the zone. The trade-off is that CPU hitters become sharper, more dangerous opponents. Experiment with difficulty levels to find a balance where games feel competitive without becoming blowouts. A setting that allows both shutouts and double-digit scoring yields the most realistic walk production.
