Charizard ex Shining Revelry: Attack Analysis
Charizard ex from the Shining Revelry set is the second Charizard ex printed in Pokémon TCG Pocket. It retains the same 180 HP, Fire typing, and Water weakness as the original Genetic Apex version, but its attack kit takes a different approach to offense.
Attacks: Self-Charging into Heavy Hitting
Charizard ex has two attacks. Stoke costs one Fire Energy and attaches three Fire Energy from the Energy Zone to itself, enabling rapid self-charging with minimal external support. The follow-up attack, Steam Artillery, costs five Energy and deals 150 damage. This attack has no Energy discard drawback, allowing it to be used repeatedly once charged. 150 damage is enough to knock out every Big Basic Pokémon ex in the format, including Dialga ex even when equipped with a Giant Cape. Only a handful of Stage 1 and Stage 2 ex Pokémon can survive the hit.
Setup Requirements and Predictability
Despite the self-charging potential, Charizard ex still requires evolving twice from Charmander and a dedicated setup turn. This mirrors the previous Charizard ex’s requirements. Because it is nearly impossible to build Energy naturally while on the bench, players must use Stoke as the primary charging method. That forces Charizard ex into a turn where it deals no damage, leaving it vulnerable for up to two opponent attacks before it can retaliate. This predictability makes the card easy for opponents to play around, especially since there is no search or acceleration tool in the current format that reliably supports it.
