Marvel Rivals Costume Customization Falls Short
NetEase has finally added costume customization to Marvel Rivals, but the feature arrived far short of player expectations. The update, which rolled out the same day it was announced, introduces color options for exactly four skins—Psylocke’s Vengeance, Luna Snow’s Mirae 2099, Winter Soldier’s Blood Soldier, and Magik’s Punchild—and each skin receives exactly one additional predefined color scheme rather than the full freedom many hoped for. Worse, players who already purchased those skins must pay again to unlock the new palette.
A New Currency Complicates Costs
Unlocking the single new color for each eligible skin costs 600 Unstable Molecules, a fresh in-game currency that cannot be earned through gameplay. The only way to obtain Unstable Molecules is by converting Lattice, another premium currency already in the game, which has led some to question why NetEase didn’t simply sell the color options directly for Lattice. The effective result is that Marvel Rivals now operates with four active currencies—five if counting the season-one costume coin from the pick-up bundle—further muddying an already layered monetization system.
Backlash and Limited Hope for Change
Players took to the Rivals subreddit to voice frustration over the gap between how the feature was framed and what it actually delivers. Complaints center on the limited customization, the requirement to pay extra for skins already owned, and the addition of yet another non-earnable currency. While the developers have reversed unpopular changes in the past when backlash reached a certain volume, the nature of this update makes a full overhaul seem unlikely; the constraints are baked into the design from the start.
