Resident Evil Requiem: Two Playstyles, Two Horrors

Resident Evil Requiem delivers a deliberate split between survival horror and action horror, embodied by its two protagonists. Director Koshi Nakanishi describes the game as offering “an emotional range unlike any other Resident Evil title,” achieved by giving each character a distinct playstyle and even different save mechanics.

      A Tale of Two Protagonists

Grace Ashcroft’s campaign channels the tense, resource-starved horror of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 7. She relies on stealth, limited inventory, and clever crafting—mixing infected blood to create explosive vials. Her primary weapon is the hefty Requiem handgun, capable of obliterating zombies when ammo is available. Leon S. Kennedy, meanwhile, plays like Resident Evil 4: fast-paced, action-oriented combat with firearms and hand-to-hand moves. He carries a hatchet that can be sharpened mid-battle for parries and decapitations, targets specific body parts to disable enemies, and can even snatch weapons from foes, including chainsaws.

      A Classic Save Mechanic Returns

On the Standard (Classic) difficulty, only Grace must use limited ink ribbons at typewriters to save her progress—a throwback to earlier Resident Evil titles. Leon does not share this restriction, further emphasizing the contrast between their experiences. This design choice reinforces Grace’s survival-horror roots while letting Leon’s action-focused gameplay flow uninterrupted.
