In a standard playthrough, the Dead Bug’s Purse—a charm-like tool that converts Rosaries into Shells upon death—is a familiar comfort. But in Steel Soul, that item is replaced by the Shell Satchel, a subtle signal that the game no longer expects Hornet to fail. The real surprise, though, waits in a dusty cave on the far eastern edge of the Blasted Steps. There, slumped in stony stillness, sits Steel Seer Zi. At first she appears inert, a piece of the background rather than a living NPC. The game does not prompt conversation. Instead, the player must strike her—a single, deliberate blow—to jolt her into awareness. Only then does the Speak command appear. It is a peculiar, almost secretive way to begin a quest, perfectly matching the hidden nature of the content itself. Players who speak with her twice accept her Wish and officially begin A Vassal Lost.
