City of Heroes: Rogue Servers Face Security Scares
What should have been a celebration of City of Heroes’ return over Memorial Day weekend instead brought security scares for several rogue server communities. The Reddit-backed Reborn/Pleiades server reported harassment of its staff, including an alleged swatting attempt and an unsuccessful hack. Staff moved hosting off the cloud and reported the breach to police. The alleged swatting claim was later clarified as a misunderstanding, and the Reddit admin apologized for the confusion.
The Discord-based Rebirth server also suffered extended downtime after a router was breached while its sysadmin was away. The intruder tampered with connection information and replaced the router’s desktop image with a Google Street View picture of the admin’s home. Rebirth’s admins preserved the router data for investigation and are exploring legal action. They confirmed the game server itself was not compromised.
Homecoming, the largest rogue server, told Massively Overpowered that its servers remain secure despite broad scanning activity. The team maintains anonymity due to continued harassment concerns. Homecoming also addressed a rumor that it refuses to help other projects, stating it has provided advice but will not share code derived from the original City of Heroes source due to DMCA risks. NCSoft has only issued a DMCA over the original i25 binary upload and has not publicly moved against any servers. Homecoming reports roughly 91,000 registered players and a peak of nearly 10,000 concurrent users over the holiday. Developers continue improving i25, with numeric cooldowns for hotbars coming in the next patch.
