      007 First Light: IO’s Hitman-style Bond game

IO Interactive, the studio behind the modern Hitman trilogy, is developing 007 First Light, the first major James Bond video game in years. The developer’s signature emphasis on creative problem-solving over direct combat played a decisive role in securing the license from MGM. Hitman franchise director Jonathan Lacaille noted that the ability to complete levels with minimal or no shooting demonstrated that a Bond game could thrive without constant firefights.

      Hitman’s Creative DNA

“In Hitman, you shoot maybe once per level, or not at all, sometimes,” Lacaille said. He explained that levels often feature large social environments where players can interact in multiple ways, a design philosophy that felt like a natural foundation for a Bond experience. MGM initially requested that IO “not make him a killing machine,” but rather than imposing hard rejections, the licensors engaged in an iterative, collaborative process, offering constructive feedback to shape the project.

A Dream Come True for IO

For IO Interactive, the Bond deal represents a full-circle moment. The studio’s earlier Hitman games drew inspiration from the Bond films, and many staff members are longtime franchise fans. “It’s kind of a dream come true to be able to work on that IP,” Lacaille said. The project allows IO to explore new creative territory while continuing to support Hitman with ongoing content. The studio aimed to lean into its strengths in crafting spy fantasy scenarios, avoiding a purely action-heavy direction. 007 First Light is designed to encourage a low body count, rewarding players for stealth, social manipulation, and strategic thinking—bringing the Bond fantasy to life without turning the character into a mere killing machine.
