Sony Acquires 10% Kadokawa Stake: IP Alliance
Sony Acquires 10% Stake in Kadokawa, Becomes Largest ShareholderSony has invested 50 billion yen (approximately $318 million) in Kadokawa, the parent company of FromSoftware, acquiring a 10% stake and becoming its largest shareholder. The deal establishes a “Strategic Capital and Business Alliance” aimed at maximizing the value of Kadokawa’s intellectual property across global entertainment markets. Tencent holds the second-largest stake in the company.
Strategic Focus on IP Expansion
The alliance is designed to boost Kadokawa’s vast IP portfolio—spanning anime, manga, light novels, games, and films—through live-action adaptations, co-produced anime, and expanded game publishing. While the announcement has fueled speculation about a possible live-action Elden Ring adaptation, Sony’s primary interest appears to lie in Kadokawa’s anime business and broader IP catalog rather than its game assets alone. Sony already operates the anime streaming services Crunchyroll and Funimation, making Kadokawa’s publishing pipeline a natural fit.
