Best MMORPGs 2010-2019: Staff Picks & Poll

When the Massively OP team sat down to name the best MMORPGs launched between 2010 and 2019, the conversation quickly turned into a mix of nostalgia, frustration, and hard-won admiration. The decade gave the genre some genuine classics, but it also delivered plenty of heartbreak — games that stumbled out of the gate, projects that never reached their potential, and a few that clawed their way back from disaster to become fan favorites.

Staff Picks: A Decade of Highs and Lows

Staff contributors highlighted a wide range of titles, from ambitious AAA releases to scrappy indie experiments. Project Gorgon stood out for its sheer creativity – an offbeat, humour-filled sandbox that proved fresh ideas still had a home in MMOs. The Secret World and WildStar earned passionate defences, the former for its unparalleled storytelling and atmosphere, the latter for its innovative housing system and dynamic combat. Both, however, were held back by missteps in marketing and management: Carbine’s stubborn focus on elite raiders doomed WildStar, while The Secret World’s convoluted launch and later rebranding never quite recaptured its magic.

Two games dominated the “comeback kid” narrative: Final Fantasy XIV and Elder Scrolls Online. Both launched to widespread criticism – FFXIV’s original version was so bad it was completely rebuilt, while ESO’s rocky debut had players questioning its future. Yet through relentless post-launch support, revamped systems, and strong content cadences, both transformed into genre benchmarks. SWTOR also earned praise for its cinematic storytelling, though contributors noted that its post-launch resources never matched its ambitions.
